At just fourteen, I was introduced to “GW Basic” programming along with a simple challenge… “if you can learn this language, the rest will come easy.” I took it to heart and began coding with earnest. Two years later, I became a certified web developer and was soon able to design any kind of website. In time, that interest led to a path in Computer Science. During my university years, I published research in IEEE’s on the gamification of healthcare as an educational tool. I also spent hours developing mobile games, web AI applications, and AI chatbots. I absolutely loved the ability to create something… from nothing.
After graduating, I became fascinated with start-ups, which led to a position with Liveling, a Swedish start-up that was later acquired by Shoppable Videos. I moved on to other opportunities leading teams of varying sizes with three additional software start- ups. This included Seebiz, a sales portal and networking platform. Later, I was with Venrup, an on-demand software development firm. Then I happened to cross paths with Innova Health.
After accepting a leadership position, I quickly developed a personal connection to Innova along with my professional role. Contrasting many companies, we spend time together as a team… but have bonded as a family. Currently, I lead the company’s Development Team in Lahore, Pakistan where we’ve rallied around a common purpose – to build a product clinicians love! It’s been incredibly rewarding to see that vision realized after 3 years of hard work… and a lot of late nights.
On the home front, I have four siblings, three of whom are doctors. I was the lone wolf who chose a different path, but couldn’t be happier with the decision. What’s made me even happier, is marrying my new wife Aiza, and despite the worn metaphor… she truly does “complete me.”
I enjoy travel, photography, collecting watches and reading about everything from self-help and philosophy, to the unknown realms of the cosmos. I feel deeply connected with nature and have learned that it always finds a balance – even in the most chaotic circumstances. That notion inspires my work and personal life… to be laser-focused on my goals and aspirations, but also to remain happy and content in life, regardless of the outcome.

I caught the healthcare tech bug 15 years ago as Director of Operations for the largest non-profit human services provider in Western Massachusetts.  I was tasked with the implementation of a new Electronic Medical Records system in over 30 facilities and ensuring regulatory compliance. It was fascinating to see the emerging efficiencies of this new technology, and moreover the impact of data-driven decision making and how it could positively influence patient outcomes. I was hooked.
After several rewarding years in this role, my career path took an unexpected turn after meeting my husband, relocating to Brooklyn, NY and having two amazing girls. When the dust settled, my professional life was reignited with SigmaCare, an Electronic Medical Records start-up for Long-Term Care. As the Director of Implementation Services, I had the distinct satisfaction of expanding my leadership responsibilities, while delighting clients with a growing, and very focused support team.
With the valuable lessons and insights gathered at SigmaCare, I held several consulting roles in different sectors, but ultimately found my way back to healthcare technology as Chief of Staff with Reliable Health Systems. One of my greatest accomplishments in this position was creating a more synergistic bridge between Client Services and Software Development - which resulted in a superior product and enhanced service for clients. And then came Innova Health.
If you’ve ever been house hunting, there’s an unmistakable feeling when you discover the right one, you just know… it’s going to be your next “home.” That’s how I felt when I met the team at Innova. I’m energized to be part of a young organization that’s committed to a superior user experience and the innovations necessary to enhance patient care. In my role as Vice President, Professional Services, my initial focus is to create a best-in-class onboarding process that will impress our client-partners… just as much as the platform itself.
When I’m not focused on accomplishing that mission-critical goal, you’ll find me enjoying the sights around Prospect Park, cheering for the Mets at Citi Field with my husband Rob and our girls Olivia and Ellie… or crushing the hearts of any poor souls brave enough to battle me in a game of ping pong.

I started my career in healthcare as a Physical Therapist who, like many others, had a desire to have an impact on patient care. Years later, as healthcare’s inefficiencies and bureaucracy became increasingly apparent, I began to look toward technology as a viable solution. Since then, I’ve embarked on a personal mission to improve the clinical experience for both patients and providers through innovation and technology.

Over the years, I founded several therapy and health IT companies, and worked in others as an executive leader. The scope of my career has covered a wide range of settings from skilled nursing and home health to outpatient therapy, as well as health IT and medical devices.

On the provider side, I founded and operated an outpatient therapy company that grew into multiple metropolitan areas. Later, as an executive for a large therapy provider, I expanded the company’s outpatient therapy services into several senior living communities and started a home therapy division that broadened its footprint into multiple states.

Enamored with its medical technology and evidence-based clinical programs, I eventually joined ACP, where I helped grow the company to more than 6,500 skilled nursing facilities throughout the U.S. Some years later, I founded PatientDox, an innovative HIPAA compliant e-signature platform serving home health. My last executive role prior to Innova Health was with Casamba, one of the industry’s largest EHR software providers in SNF therapy, where I was Sr. VP of Strategic Partnerships and VP of Product.

After Casamba was acquired, I began to think about how EHR systems could be further evolved and improved to better serve therapists and their patients. With that inspiration, Innova Health was founded around a clear purpose – to deliver a simpler, more powerful EHR solution.

In my free time, I love adventures with my wife and son, working out, and reading books of all kinds. Soccer (well…football) runs deep in my DNA, and I love anything that relates to this beautiful sport. My young son recently shifted his allegiance from soccer to tennis, and Nerf Gun battles, but like any good parent, I remain hopeful that he will eventually find his way back to the light.

Deb Buenaflor

Vice President of Product

I began my professional career in the finance world, where I eventually became a business systems analyst – a position that offered a solid overview of business and its key growth levers. It was in this role that I discovered an interest in technology and how it could turn mundane information into actionable data. With this realization, I dove deeper into technology and parlayed it into several roles in IT Management in subsequent years.

At the time, there was no defined career path for a “Product Manager,” so I worked in a variety of leadership roles critical to that discipline, including client engagement, business development, technical oversight, and operational management. Combined with a lifelong interest in sports and health, these roles and experiences led to a personal “why” that continues to fuel my career: “to be a strategic leader in the development of SaaS healthcare solutions that positively impact patient care.”

My most recent position in this capacity was with Focura, a SaaS based healthcare workflow solution serving Home Health, Hospice, Rehabilitative Therapy and Infusion services, where I was VP Solutions and earlier, as VP Strategy and Innovation. In these roles, I was responsible for the company’s strategic vision, identification of new growth opportunities and the product solutions necessary to successfully leverage them.

Over the years, my experience with SaaS based healthcare technologies provided an important insight – that we haven’t yet cracked the code for a streamlined EHR solution that answers the needs of both clinicians and patients. Patient data is still piecemealed through various EHR channels and the administrative burden on clinicians due to dated, unintuitive technology is still significant. This is what attracted me to Innova Health – the opportunity to build a more progressive solution that addresses many of those challenges, and join an emerging culture that’s galvanized around that important goal.

Outside the office, I enjoy traveling to different places with my family, but I’m equally happy in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida where you’ll usually find me in a local gym cheering a little too loudly for my boys’ basketball teams.
